Big Lake Chamber Expo 2009

This year the Big Lake community Lakes Association (BLCLA) participated in the March 1,2009 Big Lake Chamber Expo.

We developed a visual display that showed photographs from our annual meeting last fall and seasonal images showing the beauty of our lake system. One panel had information and treatment photos of Curly-leaf Pondweed and Eurasian Water-milfoil efforts in 2008. An additional section focused on our 2009 plans for invasive species chemical treatment and shoreland stabilization on the channel properties, several greenways and private shore line buffer plantings.

There were over a dozen handouts of information available to booth visitors to take home that could improve their stewardship for Lake Mitchell and Big Lake. We wish to thank the Minnesota DNR, PCA, Sherburne Soil and Water and the University of Minnesota Waters for providing these pamphlets.

Ken Warner constructed a great poster which quizzed those who stopped. Its title was “ Don’t Throw it Overboard”. If you didn’t see it at the Expo, you can test yourself at the BLCLA annual membership meeting on August 8th.

Over one hundred households entered our free drawing. The first drawing prize was won by Cassie Poseley, who took home a family package of four PFDs. They were donated by Connections Etc. The second drawing was given to Ray Cole. He took home a framed colored photograph of a Big Lake Loon donated by Sanford and Sandy Smith. Kathleen Sorensen won a 2009 season pass to Lakeside Park donated by the City of Big Lake.

President Jim Ridgeway and vise president Ken Warner were joined in our booth by Scott Chapman, Robert Eddie, and Sanford Smith. We had a great time meeting area residents, answering questions about our association and providing information about our lake system.
